7th week

Size of baby: 4-5 mm

We have reached the 7th week! Do you feel a bit more emotional? Many women tear during this period in the view of ads with babies, when seeing small children and cry even during comedies. If you feel that you are not getting much attention from your partner or your friends, this is not (completely) absurd, most pregnant women feel this way.

The big news this week:

The core of the brain is formed. Hands and feet start to emerge, although they look more like paddles than with small chubby limbs that you dream of kissing and tickling. Technically, your baby is still considered a foetus and still has a small tail, which is an extension of the coccyx. This will certainly disappear within a few weeks. The baby has doubled in size since last week. If you could take a look inside you, you would see the eyelid crease and the tip of her nose and tiny veins beneath the thin, scroll-like skin. Both hemispheres of the brain of the baby grow. The liver and pancreas are slowly getting down to work. In the umbilical cord, the veins can be seen transporting nutrients to and from the baby's tiny body.

... With an ultrasound, the doctor will perform prenatal screening (if not already done so) to ascertain intrauterine pregnancy and determine the age of the foetus? The first time you see the baby on ultrasound is a shocking experience! Try to always go to the doctor together with your partner, even if you ... have had a fight. The baby needs two parents and the man must realise that he will become a dad in a few months. Help him, show him that you need him and make him feel needed.

And let us not forget that fatigue and drowsiness continue. You may experience constipation, indigestion and heartburn, cravings for certain food or distaste for another. Some women experience excessive salivation, headaches, dizziness and frequent urination. But what will happen, you wonder. This is how it's going to go for the next thirty-something weeks? Do not worry. The good news is that most of the annoyances you are feeling now will go away at the end of the 1st trimester. The bad news, of course, is that... new ones await you in the trimesters to come!

But are these annoyances really that serious in view of the miracle taking place within you? Your glands, ovaries, placenta and the entire "chemical factory" of your system is working overtime, day and night to protect you and your baby. Oestrogen and progesterone, the production of which is incredibly multiplied during pregnancy, help your body adapt and respond to the needs of pregnancy, by softening the muscles and tissues. Relaxin softens mainly the connective tissues and joints of the pelvis to accommodate the uterus that grows day by day. Prolactin and oxytocin prepare your breasts for breastfeeding. Oxytocin also causes uterine contractions, which will bring birth. But we will talk about that later!

Experiment in the kitchen! The doctor recommended a healthy diet, but you have no idea how you can combine different foods so that you get a healthy but also delicious result? You can find smart and easy ideas on the internet that.... will make your life easier! And of course, do not forget that your mommy has been trying to teach you from your early years to eat legumes and other foods of the Mediterranean diet. Is this a good excuse to take a peek at mama's old cook book?

Have a pleasant week ... and have fun with recipes!
